Issue 18 - Fall 2010

The holidays are quickly approaching and the city is in a turmoil preparing the giant Christmas tree in front of the Duomo Cathedral and other decorations and events amidst approvals and disapprovals from the local authorities, the church and its residents. In spite of all this, there are definitely going to be some exciting and luminous Christmas markets in various areas of town. The start of the celebration is on December 7th the day of the patron saint of Milan, Sant’ Ambrogio. The traditional Oh Bej Oh Bej markets are in the area all around the Castello Sforzesco, and last till Sunday. This market is very popular with the Milanese and it is a great chance to get some of your Christmas shopping done.

Other Christmas markets will be set up in characteristic locations including the Loggia in Via dei Mercanti (old market square), in corso Europa as far as San Babila, in the Brera area the stalls will be in Via Maddonnina, Via Brera and Via Fiori Chiari.

Don’t miss this year’s Christmas Village in the public gardens at Palestro across the street from PAC – The Contemporary Art Museum. Small wooden houses, colorful lights, and the magic of the trees and quiet footpaths makes this village a real enchanted place for both young and old. From crafts to food products to antiques all are on display during the holidays.

There is more to shopping in Milan so take advantage of the public and private museums. Here are just a few suggestions. There are several great exhibitions going on in Milan at the moment which are well worth a visit. Don’t wait till the last moment or you will risk loosing them.
