Canova a the Czar's Court
The Masterpieces from St. Petersburg's Hermitage
The Exhibition, Antonio Canova at the Court of the Czar - brings some of the greatest works of sculpture to Milan. The masterpieces from the St. Petersburg’s Hermitage will be on display at the Palazzo Reale in Milan from February 23rd to June 2nd.
Seven works of art of the artist, will be present, including “The Ballet Dancer”, for the first time showed in Italy, “ The Winged Cupid” and “The Repentant Maddalena”. There will be other significant sculptural works realized by Lorenzo Bartolini, Luigi Bienaimè, Giovanni Duprè, Carlo Finelli and Pietro Tenerani too.
This important group of works coming from St. Petersburg is representative of the czar’s passion for the arts. This love for the arts, introduced during the modernization and westernization process started by Pietro I “The Great” and continued by his successors, shows, through the works he bought, the admiration of czar Nicola I for Italy and its artists.
Organized by the Comune of Milan with the Councillor of Culture, Palazzo Reale and 24 Ore Motta Cultura, in collaboration with Edison, Milan has the pleasure of exhibiting about forty sculptural works coming from one of the most important museums all over the world, the St.Petersburg’s Hermitage.
